Mr. Timothy Visits BISWA Pilot initiative on Water and Sanitation to Urban Poor, in Bhubaneswar

Ambassador Embassy of the United States of America, New Delhi is scheduled Visit to BISWA’s Innovative projects on 100 % coverage of slum Households on Pipe water supply and city sanitation in Bhubaneswar , on 7th April 2010 ,between 2- 4 PM. BISWA, recently figured among the 100 top most successful MFI in the world and ranked at 31 by Mix Market (2010), is presently running a multi stakeholders pilot projects called BHUBANESWAR SLUM DEVELOPMENT PILOT PROJECT (BSDP) since August 2008 in partnership with BMC-USAID-H&UD Dept. Govt. Of Orissa- MSDF (USA) - PHEO and BISWA women SHGs at community level, with an ultimate aim to achieve open defecation free zones in capital city of Orissa. For the first time, after 60 years since Bhubaneswar become the capital city, any slum households are getting formal legal water connections with sustainable sanitation coverage through this project . Bhubaneswar has 377 slums up to August 2008 and every month two slums with 1000 population gets add up to city. It is estimated that Bhubaneswar has over1.3 million populations with over 34 % of them are residing in slums. Only 4 % of slum dwellers are accessed to pipe water through public stand posts.
