kendrapada 1It is sheer grass, but golden in colour. It remained unnoticed and un used. But the women SHG groups of ‘BISWA’ at Kendrapara make best use of it. They convert this grass to real gold by weaving it to different forms. No can ever believe that such beautiful things are manufactured from wild grass grown in the fallow land. By using the Waste (grass coming to no use) they accumulate Wealth now. Thanks to the craftsmanship of the village ladies and their desire towards self-sufficiency, and also the guidance of the ‘BISWA’ staff there.

Come December, the women folk of the district go active in collecting the Golden Grass from the barren lands. These are available in plenty everywhere. Even they purchase it @ Rs. 40 from the local collectors and there by add to the income of the poor, landless people of the area who just work as wage earners.
After collecting the Golden Grass, they give it different shapes so as to suit the buyers. Thekendrapada 2 materials they produce out of it are containers of different varieties, pen stand, cap, glass cover etc.The products have tremendous demands in local, national and even international markets.“Even Star Hotels are purchasing these products in huge quantity to serve breakfast and food to the customers in attractive forms,” the members informed.

With ‘BISWA’s intervention, we are now able to sale the products in proper markets at better price. Previously we sold all these products to the local vendors who almost exploited us by purchasing at a very nominal price. “But gone are those days,” said Mrs Rajani Prava Parida and Mrs Kiran Bala Samal the president and the secretary of the Palli Prativa SHG respectively.

“Just doing a part time job during leisure hours and taking all care of our family, we are now able to earn Rs. 1000-1500 a month,” said Mrs Sandhya Rani Nayak, Mrs. Jita Jena and all other members of the group. The president who is a widow mostly spends the money earned from these golden grass products towards the higher education of her daughter who reads in a college now. Golden Grass in true sense proves to be Gold for Kendrapara women with guidance and support from ‘BISWA’.
